Church Membership
If you are a professing believer, church membership is a must. Maybe you don’t think so or have more questions on what membership actually means. Or maybe you have been burned by the church at some point in your walk with Christ. Wherever you are, we are here to explain church membership because we have found that it makes all the difference for believers!
Membership 101
Church membership is not a cold, lifeless term having to do with names on a list. It’s a dynamic, “flesh and blood” term that describes the members of a body of believers.
The apostle Paul powerfully pictures this body when he describes believers as “…the body of Christ and individual members of it” (1 Cor. 12:27). Throughout this passage, Paul compares gathered believers to the human body. The believer is made for community, not isolation.
When an individual is saved, he becomes a member of the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). Because he is united to Christ and the other members of the body in this way, he is then qualified to become a member of a local expression of that body.
As a follower of Christ, it is important for you to commit to a local body of believers for biblical instruction (1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Tim. 4:2), service (Gal 5:13), worship (Rom 12:1-2, Heb 12:28), ministry (1 Cor. 12:4-31, James 1:27), accountability (Hebrews 10:24–25, Col 3:16) and proclaiming the gospel to those who are lost (Matt. 28:18-20). At First Baptist Church Lyman we believe that commitment begins with becoming a member of our church body.
